Uyên Minh (b. 1991, Quang Ngai) grew up in Saigon and currently lives and works between Da Lat and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
Uyên Minh began by taking street photographs and teaching herself darkroom techniques while studying International Studies. Her practice stems from a simple, natural curiosity: the desire to step outside and the joy of observing the world around her.
Guided by materials found by chance and the ambiguous details of everyday life, she explores her connections to fragile layers of reality — from personal and collective memories to imagined spaces nourished by folk tales, oral storytelling, and dreams. Within these spaces, she is particularly drawn to opposing materials, states of disintegration, and the slippery overlap between sadness and humor, captured in the Vietnamese expression “buồn cười”.
For Uyên Minh, artistic practice is inseparable from everyday life, from manual labor and physical movement to community connections. This perspective is crystallized in the image of her grandmother sweeping the floor while reciting verses from Truyện Kiều (The Tale of Kieu), where daily labor and poetry become one.
Her works and projects have been presented at Sao La, Cu Ru, Chaosdowntown, Heritage Space, A Song, Manzi Art Space, No Cai Bum Art Festival, Duong Chay VN, Zero Station, Galerie Quynh, 20/20 Gallery (New York), Nguyen Art Foundation, as well as international festivals including Singapore Art Book Fair, Chiang Mai Photo Festival, and Beijing Photo Festival.
Uyên Minh (s. 1991 ở Quảng Ngãi) lớn lên tại Sài Gòn, hiện sống và làm việc giữa Đà Lạt và TP. Hồ Chí Minh, Việt Nam.
Uyên Minh bắt đầu bằng việc chụp ảnh đường phố và tự mày mò kỹ thuật phòng tối khi còn học ngành Quốc tế học. Thực hành của cổ khởi nguồn từ một tò mò tự nhiên: khao khát bước ra ngoài và niềm hạnh phúc khi ngắm nhìn thế giới xung quanh.
Nương theo những chất liệu tình cờ và những chi tiết đời thường mơ hồ, cổ khám phá sự kết nối với các lớp thực tại mong manh, từ ký ức cá nhân lẫn tập thể đến các không gian tưởng tượng được nuôi dưỡng bởi truyện cổ tích, truyền miệng và giấc mơ. Ở đó, cổ đặc biệt bị cuốn hút bởi các chất liệu đối lập, các trạng thái tan rã, cùng sự chồng lấn trơn trượt giữa nỗi buồn và tiếng cười (“buồn cười”).
Với Uyên Minh, thực hành nghệ thuật không tách rời khỏi đời sống thường nhật, từ lao động chân tay, vận động thể chất cho đến những kết nối cộng đồng. Góc nhìn đó đọng lại từ hình ảnh người bà vừa quét nhà vừa lẩy Kiều của cổ, nơi lao động hàng ngày và thi ca hòa làm một.
Tác phẩm và dự án của Uyên Minh từng được trưng bày tại Sao La, Cù Rú, Chaosdowntown, Heritage Space, A Sông, Manzi Art Space, Nổ Cái Bùm Art Festival, Đường Chạy VN, Zero Station, Galerie Quỳnh, 20/20 Gallery (New York), Nguyen Art Foundation, cùng các festival quốc tế như Singapore Art Book Fair, Chiang Mai Photo Festival và Beijing Photo Festival.
